Recording

Easily watch and rewind the strokes, erases, pauses, and re-directions.

Breadcrumbs records the details of one’s problem solving process (journey). Un-like paper where the initial approach and shifts in strategies are invisible, it is easy to review and rewind the details of every pen stroke (and erasure); the interim steps taken to solve math problems.

Reflecting

Empower learners to reflect on their problem solving strategies and process.

Breadcrumb displays a “heart beat line” underneath each video recording and challenges learners to examine their problem solving process. Learners tag moments on their “heart beat line” where they were engaged in Identifying, Planning, Doing, Changing or Verifying.

Visualizing

Interact with patterns in problem solving approaches and strategies.

Data about one’s own problem solving journey becomes visible and can be examined. The “heart beat line” shows where there are spikes in actions and where there are long pauses while solving a problem. Learners gain insight on the frequency of their reflection tags and notice if they are skipping useful procedures like verifying their answer.

Presenting

Explain the problem solving journey to teacher and peers.

In the apps Storyteller section, Learners can annotate their recording while presenting their problem solving approach to teachers or peers.

Educator Authoring / Problem Authoring

Ability to add custom math problems.

Breadcrumbs comes with a set of math problems and also allows educators to add their own custom problems into the app. Alternatively, students can also be placed in the role of teacher and create math problems for each other to solve (see the Breadcrumbs Learning Guide for sample ideas).
